'Tis Pity She's a Whore

The Studio, Paradise Green, Edfringe 2016, Producer

Tis Pity was the first production we put on after founding Wanton Theatre Company. A 1635 Jacobean parody of Romeo and Juliet, we took this production to the Edinburgh Fringe 2016, and played up the bloody spectacle of a cut out heart and incest by having including a high level of passion between the sibling leads, and using a real pig’s heart drenched in fake blood (of which we made gallons, and different heart blood from the blood for the sword fighting) during the climactic scene in which Giovanni runs onstage after cutting out his sister’s heart to prevent her from consummating her marriage to another man. We put the show on at 11:15 pm each day for two weeks to further the sort of taboo nature of the play. Raising funds for, and taking a large show such as this to the Fringe as our first production as a company was highly ambitious, it took months of planning and an incredible attention to detail.
